Prayas Theatre Relaunches for the Next 20 Years

15 November 2025 · By Leela · 2 min read

After 20 years of bringing South Asian stories to Aotearoa’s stages, Prayas Theatre is stepping into its next chapter — with a new committee, a refreshed website, and a bold vision for the years ahead.

Twenty Years of Stories

Since 2005, Prayas has produced over 27 productions, supported hundreds of artists, and welcomed thousands of audience members into the world of South Asian performing arts. From early rehearsals in community halls to selling out TAPAC with our 20th anniversary production Pitārā — A Box of Memories, the journey has been extraordinary.

Along the way, we’ve told stories that bridge cultures — the family warmth of Dhaba on Devon Avenue, the subversive comedy of First World Problems, the classical beauty of Kathak in Tiffin Box, the raw emotional power of A Fine Balance, and the ancient grandeur of The Clay Cart (Mricchakatika). Each production a world of its own.

A New Committee, A New Energy

In September 2025, Prayas formed a refreshed executive committee — bringing together long-standing members and new voices, united by a shared commitment to growing South Asian performing arts in Aotearoa.

With Honorary President Amit Ohdedar — our co-founder — continuing to guide us, and a committee that spans two decades of Prayas history, we’re building on everything that came before while looking firmly ahead.
