The story of Ganges was presented at the Auckland Museum as a vibrant mix of narrative, dance and folk music by Prayas performers.
The audience travelled from Gomukh up in the Himalayan mountains to the flood plains of Eastern India into its confluence at the Bay of Bengal and then in Varanasi – a city some three thousand years old, where time stands still around the river. Actors and musicians brought history and mythology to life with Bhatiyali, an age old traditional form of folk music that reflects the melodious soul of the river. The performance closed with a look at some of the issues surrounding this epic river that threaten its very existence – using actions and music to tell the story.
