Short Script Development 2020

Short Script Development 2020

OUR MENTORS

The amazing team who have been mentoring and helping bring the scripts to life.

OUR WRITERS

The finalists who have been developing their works short over the last few months with Prayas.

Prayas has always been committed to supporting community practitioners to up-skill in theatre, and this initiative, in lieu of being able to perform as of now, is how we want to provide that support. The short script development is aimed at artists who are wanting to explore and develop their playwriting skills.

We are a not-for-profit community organisation, and with our limited funding and resources, we can only develop short-form theatre to support multiple practitioners to help us keep working and agile in this time of crisis.

Prayas is is developing 12 short-form, original plays by local Kiwi writers to be included in a future production. We are seeking first drafts of bite-sized works which will be assessed and shortlisted by a panel of NZ theatre professionals. If shortlisted, the script will be put through a process of development, with resources from us, with the aim to programme it in a future anthology show.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO?

Submit a work that meets the following criteria –

A first draft of an original idea based on the following prompt:

  • THEME/PROVOCATION: “A texture that stuck with me”
  • TIME: 5 minutes or less in length (about 5 pages, give or take)
  • GENRE/FORM: any.
  • EXCEPTION: Non-verbal forms. Your script submission must involve dialogue/spoken word/similar

We don’t mind how you choose to interpret this theme – it is open to your imagination. But if you need, here are some thought starters: Texture of fabric, texture of food, texture of surroundings, the impressions that chappals (jandals) leave on your feet, impressions of food moulds, etc.

The writers will then be invited to have their works presented in an anthology show, when the restrictions have been lifted and we are able to stage a show again!

PLEASE NOTE:

While this is not a paid opportunity, Prayas will cover the costs of a script advisor, mentors and dramaturgs who will develop your work with you.
